| Plot Summary of A Year and a Day |
"Scotland is the setting and the hero is the brave, noble Norman knight, Sir Lynx de Warrenne. He is charged with taking care of the castle of Dumfries. Lynx befriends Robert Bruce and is present at the start of the struggle for Scottish freedom led by William Wallace. Lynx is a somber, sober character who feels he is infertile after having never sired a child with either his wife or mistress.
Jane Leslie is the shy, gentle maiden who is given to Sir Lynx. She is a Celt to her very bones and the thought of mating with the feared Norman Knight repulses her. Her grandmother fears she will lose some of her mystical powers if she does it with Lynx, but as is usually the case, the women's wishes are not heeded.
Jane becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son and Lynx becomes a doting and devoted father. But Jane has to contend with his ex-mistress, who is bent on revenge with a war that will shake the foundations of both England and Scotland."

"The Leslie's are the castle keepers of Dumfries Castle on the English/Scottish borders. Jock Leslie is the castle steward and the father of 10 children and 31 grandchildren. They are Celtic by descent and his youngest daughter,Jane, is gifted with healing abilities and has a way with animals. She also has second sight. Edward Plantagenet, King of England, has sent his most abled warrior, Lynx de Warenne, a childless widower, to secure Dumfries. More than anything Lynx wants children and to secure that desire he agrees to a handfasting to Jane agreeing to marry her if she becomes pregnant.
She becomes pregnant their first night together but the next day Lynx is summoned to a war. When he returns 6 months later he learns of the pregnancy and is surprised that Jane will not marry him. After the birth of his son he returns to battle and is seriously wounded by one of his own men and taken to Dumfries to die. Jane uses all of her skill to nurse him to health. During his recovery he realizes that he is in love with Jane and she comes to believe that he loves her. Once more Lynx becomes involved in the political situation in Scotland and realizes that he must get his wife and son out of Scotland to keep them safe and must also distance himself from his friend Robert Bruce who is about to make a more to become the King of Scotland.
This is an exciting story involving the politics of the time, rivalry between 2 cousins, love, and the divided loyalties of the Leslie's. "
