| Plot Summary of The Adventures of Caleb Williams |
"Caleb Williams becomes secretary to Ferdinando Falkland, a wealthy squire and a man he respects and loves greatly. When he discovers that Falkland has committed a murder and allowed two other men to be executed for that crime, he tries to leave him. Falkland, however, fearing the boy will betray his secret, has him imprisoned for debt.
Caleb changes his name and becomes a wanderer. Hunted and persecuted by Falkland, Caleb finally accuses him publicly. Falkland is tried, confesses and dies very soon after. But Caleb is stricken with remorse at having been the cause of Falkland's demise.
