| Plot Summary of Memoirs |
"Williams talks about his Mississippi childhood and his youth and early manhood in St. Louis. Some of what happened in St. Louis was useful in the construction of his first great dramatic success, The Glass Menagerie. He tells how there was no money for him to go to college, until his grand parents came through with a thousand dollars in time for him to enter the University of Missouri.
He talks about his homosexuality, his alcoholism and his addictions to pills which eventually led to a hospital stay from which he was released in 1970. A goods deal of the book concerns the wide variety of writers, actors and other notables that he has known and befriended throughout his life: William Inge, Elia Kazan, Paul Bowles, Anna Magnani, Maureen Stapleton and many others.
