| Plot Summary of Caramelo |
" "Caramelo" is a book about the Reyes family, and Cisneros follows these colorful, strong characters across several generations and landscapes as the narrator--Lala Reyes--attempts to seperate fact from family folklore. As Lala searches for her place in the world, she finds herself turning to the past--her roots, her family--for inspiration and guidance. Lala's grandparents and parents are Mexican weavers, U.S. Soldiers, and nitty-gritty-Windy-City furniture upholsters. Cisneros backs the novel with well-researched insight to Mexican and Chicago history. "
