| Plot Summary of The Fulfillment |
"Mary marries Jonathan Gray, a farmer in Minnesota, just after the turn of the 20th century. The farm was an inheritance for Jonathan and his younger brother Aaron. The two men work hard to make the farm prosper and Mary busily keeps the home. But after 7 years of marriage, Mary and Jonathan still have no children and that spoils their otherwise satisfying life.
Jonathan thinks it was childhood mumps which keeps him from having children. But Aaron never caught the mumps. Jonathan suggests to Aaron that he father a baby with Mary. Mary and Aaron are shocked and the suggestion causes a strain in the home. When Jonathan leaves for an overnight trip to purchase a prize bull, Mary and Aaron go to bed together and discover an explosive passion.
Soon after Jonathan returns, Mary discovers she is pregnant. Only Jonathan seems pleased but no one talks about who the father is. Mary is wracked with guilt and does not know what to do about the love she now feels for Aaron. Aaron is equally unhappy. Neither can figure out how to return to the once happy household."
