Plot Summary of The Gilded Web
"Alexandra Purnell is found tied up in the bedroom of Edmund, Earl of Amberley. Even though this was a prank gone awry by Edmund's younger brother, Edmund must marry Alexandra to save her reputation. Alexandra does not want to marry. She has lived under the thumb of her overbearing father and wants her independence. She agrees to a temporary betrothal to Edmumd for the sake of his reputation as well as hers. But he agrees that after a suitable time, she can end it.

As they go through the motions of pretending they are to marry, Edmund finds himself falling in love. He must convince Alexandra not to end the betrothal."

"    Alexandra Purnell is the daughter of a strict English lord who using scripture as a punishment. She has been bethrothed to the Duke of Peterleigh since she was a small child and she is resigned to marry him even though he is much older than her. Lord Beckworth, Alex's father, decides she must have a season in London before she is wed for the sake of appearances. Alex take a stroll outside during one soiree and abruptly finds herself being abducted to and left to a bed to await a Lord Eden.
   Edmund, the Earl of Amberley, is Lord Eden's older brother and when he returns home to his London townhouse after a night with his mistress, he finds an innocent young woman tied to his younger sister's bed. Outraged when he is told a Lord Eden is responsible, he immediately calls for Alex's brother to get to the bottom of the situation.
    They learn that is Alex was taken mistakenly in the place of their younger sister, but the damage has already been done and Alex's reputation is in tatters unless she weds. Edmund ask Alex to be his wife, fearing a life of unhappiness due to her quiet, fearful nature.   As the couple begin to slowly get to know each other, they find themselves falling in love, but Alex is afraid that Edmund feels trapped by her and Edmund mistakenly thinks the same thing. The two must work their way through Alex's childhood of coldness and misconceptions before they find the smooth path of marital bliss."
