"This story features British detectives Andy Dalziel and Peter Pascoe.
Dalziel, the senior of the two is an old-fashioned policeman, unbound by the new codes of political correctness sweeping the force. Pascoe, younger and more idealistic, still cannot hide the grudging admiration for his boss.
Pascoe is troubled though by letters he is receiving from ex-con Franny Roote that seemingly points to Roote's involvement in a number of unsolved crimes. Dalziel focuses his attention on an old enemy, solicitor Marcus Belchamber who specializes in getting the guilty off the hook.
The two strands come together as Belchamber is implicated in the heist of a priceless artifact on its way to North Yorkshire for display while Roote is seen spying on a young librarian who was a key witness in a case that implicated one of his closest friends."
