Plot Summary of Falling Awake
"

Putnam, Nov 2004, 24.95, 432 pp.
ISBN 0399152229

Lucid dreaming is the ability to control one's dreams and be able to find answers to questions and problems that one can't obtain when awake. Isabel Wright, a level five dreamer, works at the Belvedere Center for Sleep Research where she analyzes the dreams of other lucid dreamers. When her boss dies and his son takes over, he fires Isabel who intends to be a freelancer. He doesn't realize until it is too late that without her work, the company will go bankrupt in a few months. He is determined to lure her back to his company.

One of Isabel's anonymous clients is Ellis Cuttler, an operative for a black ops organization; he believes lucid dreaming can help solve murder investigations. His director orders Ellis to do whatever it takes to bring Isabel into the operation. Ellis and Isabel have dreamed about each other for months before they even met and an instant attraction flares to life as soon as they do meet. The road to happiness is bumpy because someone is gunning for Ellis and doesn't care how many innocent victims get killed in the crossfire.

"Ellis Cutler works for a secret government agency that uses dreams to investigate crimes. Ellis is their best agent when it comes to solving crimes through his dreams. Ellis is on the hunt for a rogue agent by the name of Vincent Scargill, who he suspects of killing another agent. Ellis records his dreams and sends them to the Belvedere Center for Sleep Research. The agency is the primary source of income for the Belvedere Center, since the government has an interest in Dr. Martin's research of lucid dreaming. Since Ellis' search for Scargill is considered an obsession, his boss sends Ellis to California to offer Isabel Wright a position with the agency. Isabel Wright is the dream analysts who analyzes Ellis' dreams. Isabel has never met Ellis and only knows him as Client #2. Based on Ellis' dream, Isabel forms a crush and secretly calls Ellis, "Dream Man." On the other hand, Ellis has also formed an attachment to Isabel and affectionately refers to her as, "Tango Dancer." The new owner of the Belvedere Center for Sleep Research fires Isabel because she was the only employee at the center without a PHD in psychology and was once employed by a psychic hotline. Ellis seeks out Isabel to continue to analyze his dreams and uses Isabel as a way to gain entrance to the Center. Ellis believes that Scargill wants to steal a powerful dream enhancing drug developed by Dr. Belvedere. Ellis and Isabel fall passionately in love while tracking down the killer of Dr. Belvedere, and tracking the dangerous Scargill through lucid dreaming."
