Plot Summary of The Last Unicorn
"One day a solitary unicorn overhears a conversation between two humans and realizes that she is the last of her breed. Setting out to find out what happened to the others, she soon picks up a couple of human companions. She is rescued from a travelling carnival by the inept magician Schmendrick, who has great potential for magic, but cannot control it, and when they meet a group of outlaws, the outlaw's cook, Molly Grue, decides to go with them.

They find out that the Red Bull, a creature in the service of the mean King Haggard, long ago collected all the other unicorns together and drove them towards Haggard's kingdom. The unicorn nearly suffers the same fate, but Schmendrick is finally able to do real magic, and turns the unicorn into a woman, whom he gives the name Lady Amalthea. Once they reach Haggard's castle, two problems arise: the unicorn begins to forget who she really is, and Haggard's adopted son, Prince Lír, falls in love with her. In the end, they discover what happened to the unicorns, and it is Amalthea, back in unicorn form, who can save them, but only if she finds the courage to face the Red Bull and challenge him to a fight."
