| Plot Summary of We Fed Them Cactus |
"Fabiola Cabeza de Baca, a descendant of the conquistador Cabeza de Baca, tells about her life growing up in New Mexico's Llano Estacado (Staked Plains). Her mother died when she was young, so she spent some time living at her father's parents' place in Las Vegas, NM, and some of the summer at her father's ranch on the Llano. There's some really great description of the Llano, people of the New Mexican part of the Llano, and some tales of NM, including mention of Billy the Kid (someone she knows told her about their experience with him), and a section on Vincente Silva, a New Mexican bandido (bandit) and tales of his terrorizing Northern NM just before the turn of the century. She tells about Americanos (white Americans) coming into NM Territory, plowing the land, and ruining it for pasturage, the terrible drought of 1918, and other mesmerizing stories. Some of her own life is mixed in as well, though it's mostly a tale about old time New Mexico."
