Plot Summary of Separation Anxiety
"Since childhood, Wichita Gray and Jonah KiaLos have been virtually inseparable. As teenagers, they leave they small-town home and move to Chicago. Now, a dozen years later, Wichita worries that she has become too reliant on Jonz, and that their personalities have been twisted together for so long that they won't be able to exist without one another. Wichita worries over how to sever the bond between them, worries that her inability to cope without Jonah will turn her into her mother, and finds the perfect "scalpel" in a friendly bartender at a club where she and Jonah spend a lot of evenings. In response, Jonah quits his job at the museum where they both work, but Wichita talks him out of it, saying she will leave.

In the midst of this is Wichita's struggle with her dysfunctional family--the reason she ran away so long ago. Now, her sister, Geena, sixteen and pregnant, has shown up at Wichita's Chicago apartment, looking for support. Wichita and Geena clash almost instantly, and after quitting her job, Wichita takes the car Geena and her boyfriend "borrowed" to come and drives the two of them back to Hove, her hometown. Once there, stranded by her lack of car and the miscarriage that sends Geena into the hospital, Wichita confronts a lot of memories, as well as her mother, and comes to realize that, though children may come up against their parents' mistakes, they are not doomed to repeat them--and that she really, really doesn't want to live without Jonah."
