| Plot Summary of Stephen Sondheim: A Life |
" Stephen Sondheim was raised on the Upper West Side of New York in a prosperous family. He was taught to play the piano by he father. After his parent's divorce he was sent away to military schools and felt abandoned. When he became acquainted with the family of Oscar Hammerstein, it was as though he found a second father and he determined to follow in his footsteps. After a stint with Hollywood, Sondheim was able to get a foothold in the theatre when he got his first success collaborating with Leonard Bernstein on the lyrics for West Side Story. His first solo production on Broadway was the very successful, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. The book also discusses the composer's homosexuality. "
