The young boy dies within the year and the girl is left to learn how to provide for herself. She lives alone on the island for nearly 15 years. Based on a true story."

After a few months, Ramo died, leaving behind Karana all by herself. Year after year, she waited for a ship to come and take her away. While she waited, she built shelters, made weapons and hunt for food to keep herself alive. She also managed to make friends with some island animals. This story is not only adventurous but also a tale of self-discovery."

Karana must learn to survive on her own. She waits patiently, until the day her tribe will come back for her. As she explores deep into the island, she befriends a dog and named him Rontu. Soon, the Aleuts come back, and bring with them a girl Karana's age. Karan stays hidden until the girl finds her. But, the girl leaves without Karana. Month after month Karana waits. 18 years later, a ship comes to bring her to a mission. She learns her entire tribe was killed when the ship sank. She was the only Indian left. Karana died at the mission, and was buried there. "

"At the beginning of "Island of the Blue Dolphins," Karana is jus a normal Indian girl who lives on an island with her family. But when a threat of war is posed to the islands, the people decide to leave. When Karana's brother forgets something on the island, she goes back…and the boats leave without her. Thus, she is left to fend for herself.
She spends her time only surviving, waiting for her family to come back. But then she realizes that they are not coming back. A very sad Karana builds a better shelter and starts to make a life for herself. She saves a hurt dog that becomes her only companion.
But soon she becomes stir crazy. She builds a boat and circles the island, but finds no one. Her main struggle in the book is how to get off the island."
