Plot Summary of Frindle
"Nick is an average kid in the 5th grade. He has a mean spelling teacher who always makes the kids use the dictionary. One day Nick's friend spots a pen on the ground and Nick starts calling it a frindle. The new word is a big hit in Nick's class and finally the whole school. People all over the world are saying the new word. Is the word a big hit, or will Nick get in trouble for it?
"

Ashley Nobis , Resident Scholar

"Nick Allen was a boy with ideas. Most of these ideas are ways to make school more fun and also to get out of homework. When Nick gets to fifth grade, he meets his match -Mrs. Granger. Mrs. Granger is the strictest teacher in the school. She can spot a kid chewing gum a mile away. She assigns long vocabulary lists. She loves the dictionary. And, what's worse, she can't be deterred from assigning homework. It'll take all of Nick's ingenuity to deal with her. Lucky, ingenuity is one thing Nick has plenty of. He wonders why the word "pen" means the thing we write with. This leads to him inventing the word "frindle." Nick fights against the dictionary loving Mrs. Granger for the right to use his new word.
