Plot Summary of The President's Daughter
"This is the story of Meghan Powers, whose mother becomes the first female President of the United States. (It is the first book in a trilogy about Meg Powers.) The novel follows Meg and her family throughout the election process and through the first several months of Katharine Powers's Presidency.

At the beginning of the novel, when Meg's mother is still a Senator, Meg is a relatively normal teenager who talks to her friends about boys, school, and parties. But when her mother announces that she wants to run for President, Meg has to deal with being in the public eye, being separated from her parents much of the time, caring for her younger brothers, and all of the other pressures and changes that come along with the political campaign.

Throughout the election, Meg's whole family experiences some conflict, but the strain is particularly felt in the relationship between Meg and her mother. Their relationship is strained because of the unique pressures of their situation, but they must also work through the fact that they are very similar people, who tend to get angry quickly, and brood rather than talk to other people about their problems.

The book ends on an upbeat note when Meg, through a thoughtless prank, pushes her mother's patience to the limits, but ultimately learns that her mother loves her very much and their relationship is still the same, although her mother is the President."
