"A START IN LIFE (Un Début dans la Vie) is a novel published in 1842 by Honoré de Balzac.
Oscar Husson is 17 years old and has just completed high school. His mother, who has devoted herself to her son, has found for him a job with a future at Mr. Moreau's mansion in the country nearby. But young Oscar, filled up with vanity, will talk too much in the convey during the journey and offend a passenger who'll reveal himself to be Oscar's future employer.
Forced to come back to his mother's place, Oscar swears to his mother that he's understood the lesson. She will then present him to her brother-in-law, the wealthy Cardot, who'll recommend Oscar to the lawyer Frédéric Desroches. Oscar begins his law studies but, during a wild night in Paris, will be the cause of series of catastrophes that will lead Desroches to fire the young man who, once again, will have to come back to his mother who hasn't a penny left.
It appears soon that only the French army can save Oscar Husson from a failed start in life."
