| Plot Summary of The Scottish Bride |
"Mary Rose, a Scotswoman, is an illegitimate girl who she doesn't believe anyone should want, but Ericson MacPhail tries to marry her. He goes so far as to try to rape her, but she always escapes him. After getting battered in a river, she ends up at Kildrummy Castle, whose new owner (the new baron) is a vicar from England. They are the ones who end up marrying.
When they go back to England, though, the vicar is a changed man. He went from sober to very happy, and the parishoners don't like the change, so he becomes very cold again. After fending off another man, Mary Rose hits her head on a fireplace, is taken back to the vicarage by the vicar's children (her stepchildren by now) and has a miscarriage when she doesn't even know she's pregnant. The vicar turns back into the loving, laughing man he became, resigns as the vicar, and goes back to Scotland with his family. The parish sends for him again when they realize it's not a happy place without him."
