"Lauren Edgeworth is a beautiful and very proper lady with no desire to marry. Kit Butler is a nobleman who causes scandal wherever he goes. Wanting to get out of an arranged marriage, Kit makes a bet with his friends that he will court and marry Lauren Edgeworth. But when he realizes that he genuinely likes her, he confesses, and is surprised when she offers him a proposition: she will pretend she is his fiancee if he gives her a summer to remember in return. As Lauren begins to transform his life and his heart, Kit gradually comes to realize that he wants the charade to become a reality."

" After being jilted at the alter, Lauren Edgeworth decides that she will never marry. She travels to London to be a companion to her pregnant friend, and during her one and only ball she decides to attend, she is introduced to Kit Butler, an infamous member of the ton. Kit, who is now heir due to his brother's death, has decided to find a bride and bring her home in an effort to foil his father's choice of a bride for him. Kit, who was told that Lauren was an impentrable ice princess, wagers with his friend that he will marry to her within the month.
Lauren knows that there must be some plot behind Kit's attention to her, and she discovers the wager. She proposes a false engagement to him instead, so she can get away from her overprotective family members and set up a spinster's residence and he can find a bride he truly wants.
Kit and Lauren never suspect that their false engagement might be something they both want to make real, but both have insecurities that keep them at distance from each other. Kit's is held back by his fallout with his family, and Lauren's jilted marriage and lack of true parents hold both of them back from showing their true feelings."
