Plot Summary of One White Rose
"Douglas arrives at Isabel's ranch to pick up a horse her husband sold to him but finds the husband has died and she is currently in labor. He convinces her to let him stay and help her take care of her and the baby until they can leave. Only problem is, the man that's after Isabel and her ranch won't let them leave until she agrees to marry him. But Douglas has some brothers and a few tricks up his sleeves."
Brandy Todd, Resident Scholar

"Douglas Clayborne walks into a barn to pick up a horse he's bought and finds a shotgun pointed at him. Isabel Grant was a fine looking woman but after coming out of the stall she was hiding in Douglas finds her 'as big as a house' and in premature labor. When her water breaks he carries her up to the house and delivers her son. Her husband was shot in the back by Boyle, a neighboring rancher who wants her land and her. She is basically being kept a prisoner on her own land. The rancher and his men won't let anyone onto her land or let her off. It just happened to be storming the night Douglas got through unseen and what helped even more was the men watching were drunk and didn't hear him. Now, with little Parker being born and the horses and house in need of supplies from town, Douglas sneaks out under the cover of darkness to break into the store in town and talk to the doctor who they won't let through. The plan is to keep it secret that the baby has been born to give him time to grow and get stronger before trying to get out of there. Douglas and Isabel become close during these 8 weeks they share together and end up in each others arms. She has fallen in love with him but he mistakes it for gratitude and figures that time and distance will take care of the feelings they've developed for each other. Shortly after their night together, Boyle's men come to the cabin when he's away with their guns blasting.

Amy in Wisconsin, Resident Scholar

"When Douglas went to Sweet Creek to get the Arabian stallion he bought from Parger Grant, first the woman threatened to shoot him, and within the next hour, the fretting mama delivered a baby boy into his hands. Isabel was the most vulnerable female he had ever encounter but also the most strong-willed. He was also very partial to her freckles, and her vibrant red hair but he really shouldn't notice for she was a new mother and recently widowed.

The strong, bossy but relaible Douglas was her guardian angel. For once, she felt protected and cherished. Life was hard with Sam Boyle waiting to snatch up both her and her land so he could expand his ranch. Her situation was severly grave for Boyle literally owned the town for the big bully threatened everyone who dared to interfere. Douglas-he was her rock and her new friend. The man was good with horses and very good with her.

No woman should lived under such modest conditions for Isabelle had long lived without some of the basic necessities and devoid of luxury. She was the first woman (other than his sister, Mary Rose) whom he felt so protective of. But first he and the rest of the Clayborne men had better handle the big bully. "
