Plot Summary of The Black Velvet Gown
"A young mother finds herself alone and unable to raise her family so she must move to an almost forgotten town to be a housekeeper for a desolate man. The man, being a former professor, decides to tutor her children. Her oldest daughter finds joy in learning and soon becames the man's prize pupil. After years of this life, the man is in an accident which later claims his life. He leaves a surprising request in his will that sends the daughter out to seek employment at the neighboring mansion. She becomes a laundry girl and suffers the brutality of that life until the lady of the house learns she can read. This opens up a new world for the girl as she is allowed to live a better life as the lady's maid. Being in the mansion leads her to finding the man she would love and an unlikely friend. She has many adventures, some not as good as others and in the end she comes to realize the important things in life."
