But when Aly tells them that she wants to be a spy they both tell her NO! So Aly decides to leave for a while so her parents can cool off. But while sailing away she is captured by pirates and sold as a slave. The patriarch of the family she is sold to is a relative of the throne and has a wife with two children and two girls from a previous marraige, Sarai and Dove. The family she is sold into is told they must leave the land because the king no longer trusts them. Aly is approached by a god, the trickster Kyprioth, and given a wager. If she can keep Sarai and Dove alive till the end of the summer than he will send her home to her family. Aly accepts the wager figuring this is a great way to prove to her dad that she can be a spy.
