| Plot Summary of Awake and Dreaming |
"Awake and Dreaming is an exploration of Theo's relationships with her mother, Rea; her aunt, Sharon; her friends, the Kaldors; the ghost, Cecily; and herself. The novel begins with an eerie prologue that peaks the reader's interest. Who is this ghost? How does she fit in with the story? It is only when we continue reading, that the story begins to unravel. We are introduced to 9 year old Theo in Vancouver, British Columbia. Theo, with her difficult home life, also has trouble in school where she doesn't fit in and the students call her licehead. To escape this, Theo often daydreams. In her mind she often fantasizes of families, either ones she is reading about or dreams of on her own.
