"Two races, the indigo and the gulden, have lived side by side for almost two centuries. The matriarchal indigo control the power and the wealth, while the patriarchal gulden serve them in the cities and maintain their own culture. Nolan, a young scientist preparing to leave his career and marry, and Kit, an indigo noblewoman who was raised amongst the gulden, discover that their superiors are planning to change the balance of power on their world and Nolan is the only one who has the means to stop them."
