| Plot Summary of A Matter of Scandal |
" Miss Emma Grenville, who is no silly debutante, has had her fill of thick-headed noblemen who believe women exist only to satisfy men. And her arrogant new landlord, the Duke of Wycliffe, is the worst of the lot! The too-attractive cad wants to triple the rent on Emma's finishing school for young ladies to help get his uncle's estate out of debt. Well, Greydon Brakenridge clearly needs educating-about women. And Emma is just the one to enlighten him!
The handsome duke has never met a woman he couldn't outwit or seduce. And now that he's tricked Emma into a wager, he has the stubborn headmistress right where he wants her-and hopefully, soon in his bed. But the confirmed bachelor underestimates the intelligent and surprisingly sensual Miss Grenville. For she may be leading Greydon to a place neither dreamed they'd ever go-to the altar. "

" Grey, the Duke of Wycliffe, has traveled to his Uncle's estate, Haverly, to help him out of financial ruin. Grey has come up with an estate plan that includes raising the rent on all the tenants, which includes Emma Grenville, the headmistress of a local finishing school.
When Emma is informed of the raise, she refuses to agree to it, and ends up wagering with the Duke, if she wins her rents stays the same and he pays it for two years, if he wins it she must pay the raised amount.
Emma must make a successful estate plan to win and Grey must teach her London social graces class. Grey's ultimate goal is to bed Emma, who he finds extremely attractive. Emma see Grey as a learning opportunity and she lets Grey teach her the seductive arts. As they become entangled in each other's lives, they find something more than passion growing between them, and for the first time in Grey's life, he feels respect for women, only there is a vengeful woman in the background who wants to see Emma fail to Grey, so she creates a scandal around the school, but the plot has the opposite effect bringing Emma and Grey closer than they ever were before."
