| Plot Summary of Kafka's Curse |
"This is the first novel by South African writer and poet Achmat Dangor to be published in the U.S. Omar and Malik Khan, two brothers in Johannesburg plagued by social, cultural, familial, and personal confusions, have tried in different ways to conquer or escape them: Omar by changing his name to Oscar Kahn and trying to pass as Jewish and white to become an architect, Malik by adopting more militant Islamic culture and serving in the Provincial Legislature. But both get involved with Amina Mandelstam, a therapist who may also be a terrorist, and both have difficulties with their wives, families, and religion. Though beautifully written, this novel is related by multiple narrators and the plot is extremely difficult to follow and piece together."
David Loftus, Resident Scholar
