Plot Summary of Rules of Engagement
"      In conservative Victorian England, an unmarried man will have a hard time gaining and maintaining the favor of the young queen, even though she was your childhood friend. The very unmarried Devon, earl of Kerrich, whose family bank hold the royal accounts, is the latest man to earn the displeasure of the queen. Not only did she threaten to withdraw the royal family's money from the Earl's bank, but also threatened to squeal about a secret about Devon.

To gain back the queen's favor Devon hatched a plan: first, he will adopt a pathetically grateful orphan of the streets, and second, hire a governess to take care of the brat, since actually taking care of the orphan will cramp his lifestyle. He also wanted the governess to be hideously unattractive so as not to be ambitious as to seduce the lord of the house.

Miss Hannah Setterington, head of the Distinguished Academy of Governesses is willing (for a price!) to secure the orphan and the governess. However, she forgets to inform the Earl that the only woman capable of the task is the beautiful Miss Pamela Lockheart. With a lot of pasty make up, tight hairdo and frumpy clothes, Miss Lockhart transforms into the governess that the Earl wanted: the epitome of plainness. Little did the Earl knew that beneath all the charade hides the woman whose beauty has made a young Devon pull off the most talked-about stunt in the ton's history.
