Plot Summary of Mischief
"This is another novel in McBain's series featuring the 87th Precinct. All the usual characters are present doing the same detective work they have been doing in fifty odd previous novels. The main villain in this novel is 'The Deaf man' an old adversary of protagonist, Steve Carella. The 'deaf man' is sending Carella messages loaded with hints as to where he is going to strike. Carella and his partner do not reach a conclusion about the crime that is going to be committed until the last pages of the book as the clues the Deaf Man gives are meant to mislead.
Running parallel to the case of the Deaf Man are several other crimes the officers in this fictitious city are trying to solve. Someone is dumping old people all over town and someone else is murdering graffiti artists.

"As Detectives Kling and Parker investigate a serial killer who chooses graffitti-artists as his victims, Detective Steve Carella begins receiving calls from and old adversary, the Deaf Man. Soon, portions of a science-fiction novel begin arriving at the 87th, clues to the Deaf Man's next big crime.
This novel, more than most McBain books, deals with larger issues than an individual crime, in this case racism, as Detective Parker, a notorious bigot, dates the Hispanic mother of a murder victim and the Deaf Man readies a horrific scheme that hinges on inflaming the everyday racial tension present in the big city."
