Five Star, Nov 2003, 25.95, 302 pp.
ISBN: 1594140715
In 1984 teenager Megan Leary finds her mother Doris dead. Everyone in Exile believes Megan killed her mother. However, during the trial, someone else confesses he killed the older Leary. Megan flees town, but most townsfolk still believe she is the killer.
Fifteen years later Megan returns to her hometown hired by an old friend to look for her missing high school age daughter, Aurelia Galvan. Meg is a licensed sleuth to the chagrin of the local sheriff's department who want her to leave town. Only newcomer Sheriff Deputy Dan Fox acts undisturbed by her activities though he has to rescue a drunken Meg from a deliberately set fire. Together they begin to learn what happened to the vanished teen and to her mother. However, someone wants to keep her ignorant of the truth and begins killing people, who may have been part of a conspiracy of silence. Meg and Dan could easily be next.
Though Megan getting drunk even while she needs to maintain her tough girl posture seems out of place except to allow Dan to rescue her, fans will enjoy this crime thriller. Once Meg speeds into town, the story line never eases off the accelerator. Meg is a strong protagonist and a bewildered Dan is an ideal sidekick. Fans will enjoy Roxanne Lomgstreet's fast-paced multiple murder mystery.
