This must be the biggest book of short stories in print. There are eighty-four of them and all by Lawrence Block. Some of them feature characters that Block has created and written series' of novels about, like Matthew Scudder and Bernie Rhodenbarr. They are all crime stories and if you like Block and you like short stories (which I do) you will love this book. Some I had read before in other publications like ‘A Bad Night for Burglars' where the householder comes home early, discovers the burglar and uses the situation to his advantage. One of the characteristics shared by some of Block's characters is obsession like the man who convinces himself that his wife and brother are having an affair and plotting their demise. There is even a tale of a murdered man being sent back to earth to solve his murder. This book reveals to readers the enormous plans that can be put in place to commit a crime, and the criminal is not always brought to justice.
