"Jonas Quarrel has the ability to touch an old object and see and feel what the person who owned it did, but only if the item is associated with violence. After nearly killing someone, he has given up teaching renaissance history or working with his gift and wanders the world. He discovers Verity and realizes she might help him even though they have never met. He follows her 2000 miles and takes a job as dishwasher in her resturant. They start an affair and he finally tells her who he is. She has the abilty to enter his visions and help him control them. Neither realize that someone else is using her to draw him into a revenge plot. "
