Law partner Bentley Taylor III ended his engagement to attorney Madelyn Phillips in order to marry someone else. He also left her with no job and no place to live. Still, Madelyn always dreamed of leaving the United States to tour the Highlands of Scotland so she goes on her honeymoon sans her husband.
Bentley follows her and makes life miserable by using his contacts to cut off her credit and steals her clothing. Still Madelyn refuses to have anything to do with her former suitor. Instead she is attracted to Patrick Macleod, who hates life ever since he lost his cuckolding wife and child six years ago. Everyone except perhaps his brother and sister-in-law thinks he killed his spouse. Especially blaming him is his in-laws, who want him dead. In this environs, he does not want to fall in love, but he cannot resist Madelyn.
Fans of contemporary romances starring two delightful lead characters and containing a touch of the supernatural and a degree of mystery will enjoy A GARDEN IN THE RAIN. The story line is fast-paced, but the behavior of Bentley does not become clear until late in the book, a major turn-off as he is a key player who makes no sense until deep into what is otherwise a delightful story. Still the cast is strong and the different sub-genre elements blend nicely together so that the audience receives a fabulous novel.
