Though over a year has passed since her beloved husband David died, leaving her alone with two “adult” preadolescent sons, Kate Chilton still misses him after fourteen years together. At a party, she meets business mogul Randall Johnson, who invites her to dinner, but Kate declines, as she feels disloyal and not ready to date.
Her memory of David undergoes a paradigm switch when an architectural partner of her late spouse drops off papers. Among the documents is a love letter from a Sylvia to “Dearest David” that was obviously more than a one-night stand. Hurt, but needing to move on, Kate agrees to go out with Randall for one night before she revives her engineering career. However, neither the playboy nor the soccer mom is ready for how deep is their love will become.
This debut tale is an enjoyable contemporary romance starring a delightful lead female character struggling with a rainbow of emotions though Sylvia's letter makes it to easy for Kate to move on with her life. The support cast especially her children, her best friend, and Randall (even if his actions seem too heavy-handed) enable the audience to understand the feelings that are pounding at Kate's heart and brain. Nancy Herkness will be around for quite awhile if this tale is any indication of her writing skills.
