Kensington, Aug 2003, 5.99, 352 pp.
ISBN: 082171400X
In 1974 Newark, the twin sisters wait in the car for their father to leave the bar to drive them home, but he is to busy getting intoxicated. Charles Eshley snatches one of the girls, eventually raping and killing Marla. Though he is the obvious suspect in other murders of one sibling of twins, no evidence exists to prove it. In the Marla murder, the surviving sister Sydney had seen him and testifies at his trial that he abducted her sibling. Her testimony convicts Charles to a life sentence.
Almost three decades later, Sydney, a divorced mother raising a teen, learns that a twin has been snatched. She also finds out that Charles has been paroled as a model prisoner with a heart ailment. She believes Charles took the child. When a second abduction occurs, she turns to the author of a book on the snatching of Marla and other twins, Marshall King for help. As she and Marshall fall in love, the danger for Sydney and her daughter mounts, but almost no one believes she or her daughter are in danger from an ailing old man.
Like many recent novels the plot focuses on twins as its prime device (to the point of twins baby boom). Though overused, Hunter Morgan keeps his tale fresh and engaging, as Sydney seems alone in her effort to keep her daughter safe. Though the final twist is reminiscent of a Dean Koontz novel (this geezerette cannot recall the title), the audience will enjoy this engaging romantic suspense thriller.
