Amelia and Evelyn Barton-Forbes, her new companion, travel to Egypt, encounter and save the blustering Emerson, join an archeological expedition and are pursued by Evelyn's old lover and cousin. Things get really difficult when it appears that the site has been cursed and that a mummy is exacting revenge for desecrating its resting place."

"Peters introduces Amelia Peabody, a sharp, somewhat snippy heroine of a soon-to-be-successful series set mostly in Egypt during the last two decades of the 19th century. Peabody, quick with her umbrella as well as her mind and mouth, meets her future husband, imperious but good-hearted archaeologist Radcliffe Emerson, in this story and solves a murder mystery as well as working alongside Emerson on the dig. A ghost seems to be haunting the work site, scaring away the Arab laborers and occasionally killing one. Amelia's rescue of "fallen" but basically good woman Evelyn to be her companion on a trip through Egypt will also bear future relational fruit."

"Armed with a sturdy umbrella and a sharp tongue, Victorian gentlewoman Amelia Peabody travels to Egypt. At a stopover in Rome, she rescues Evelyn, a fellow Englishwoman, "ruined" and left penniless by a good-for-nothing lover. The women board a "dahabeeyah" -- a luxurious Egyptian boat -- for a breathtaking tour of the Nile and the surrounding pyramids.
Their idyllic trip turns sour after they stop at an archaeological camp run by the hot-tempered, opinionated Radcliffe Emerson. As Evelyn and Emerson's brother, Walter, fall in love, Radcliffe and Amelia bicker -- a situation exacerbated by a series of suspicious accidents and odd happenings
Then, a mummy appears, or someone pretending to be a mummy in order to frighten them. But Amelia will not be deterred, either by a mummy risen from the tomb or an insufferable, egotistical archaeologist. She sets out to discover the reasons behind all the strange events. But as she solves the mystery, she encounters one more surprise: the love blossoming in her heart for Radcliffe Emerson, and his for her."
