"The final part of the tale of the war of the Old Ones against the Dark is a tragedy and a victory. The Grail and the Harp of Gold have been found and have played their part; the Six Linked Talismans are still at use in the war. The Wild Hunt was released to harry the Dark, who suffered badly at their hands. Now there remains the quest for the Crystal Sword in the Lost Land. Our Jedi of the previous books are now all brought together: Simon, Jane, and Barney join with Will and Bran in this, the most complex and twistingly plotted of the adventures. Merriman Lyon (Merlin) and The Lady play Yoda to their Skywalker.
The writing is original and dazzling, with the surge of a controlled riot, and the dialogue Shakespearean in places. Although Susan Cooper is probably nearest to Charles Williams in overall style, the whole Sequence cleverly pays homage to many writers: Mallory, Shakespeare, Tolkien, George MacDonald, C.S. Lewis and others. With layers of symbolism, much that has puzzled in the previous books is explained, and yet there is more to add. It is certain that most adult novels do not have such multiple dimensions and symbolisms. The Roman empire, king Arthur, Owen Glendower, and Taliesin are all visited and play a part in making modern Britain. The skilful use of time travel interweaves history and destiny, and the conclusion both satisfies and inspires awe, it lifts up our young heroes who still have their lives before them."
