Plot Summary of The Old American
"In 1736, Nelson Blake, 34, was captured by some Iroquois and kept as a slave. Ten years later, his wife ransomed him. Blake told few details about his ten-year captivity except that those ten years were the happiest years in his life. Two and a half centuries later, his captivity caught the interest of a history professor and writer, Ernest Hebert. Hebert put together a fictionalized story of Blake's captivity into which Hebert introduces much historical detail about the Indians and the pioneers. The term "American" was originally applied to the Indians. The "Old American" is Caucus-Meteor, who captured Blake. The two men learn to respect each other. Hebert tells this story in a way that touches your heart and opens your eyes to how truly human all of us are.
