Plot Summary of Regeneration
" The first in this trilogy, “Regeneration” by Pat Barker is an impressive read.
Barker bases her book on actual facts, the relationship between an army psychologist at the
British hospital at Craiglockhart and noted anti-war activist and poet Sigfried Sassoon.
It is a gripping story of the poet's struggle with his own conscience, his obligation as a
British citizen of gentry, and his relationship with friends and acquaintances who were
instrumental in his life. Barker clearly shows us the agony and the tragedy of this senseless
war where untold numbers of young men were slaughtered (on both sides) for reasons that
are more egocentric and political rather than just and humane. Barker went on to win the
Booker Prize for the third installment of this powerful trilogy.
"

Bill Hobbs, Resident Scholar

"Dr Rivers is researching the mental effects of war at the Craig Lockhart Institute where he meets Sassoon, poet and concientious objector. Will his patients be permanently damaged by war, or will they be able to overcome
their difficulties and achieve 'regeneration'?"
