In sixteen previous episodes, Brother Cadfael has truly been the champion of justice
in this fascinating 12th century mystery series by Ellis Peters. In “The Potter's Field,”
Peters once again provides her readers with an absorbing case. It is 1143 in Shrewsbury.
A farmer unearths the bones of a person, later indentified as a woman, but no one knows
who she was. She has been buried in unconsecrated ground, ground that was once owned
by one of the monks of the abbey (Brother Rauld) who lived there with his wife before
taking his vows and giving up his worldly claims. Brother Cadfael knows she has been
killed, but who could have done such a thing? This is a mystery that puts Cadfael at his
very best. He draws upon his own worldly knowledge and the help of his friend the Sheriff
to solve this one. One of the best of this series.
