Plot Summary of Cold Mountain
"A southern soldier in the U.S.A. Civil War deserts after almost recovering from a life-threatening injury. The end of the war is near; he no longer believes war can solve anything. He travels home on foot through the Virginia wilderness to the woman he loves. While the soldier is away, his woman suffers the loss of family and wealth. With the help of a local mountain woman, the woman survives going from riches to rags. While the woman is trying to save a dying man, the soldier arrives home in greatly altered condition. The man and woman finally recognize each other and manage to accept their changes. Tragedy strikes soon afterward, but all is not lost. Love in many forms lives on."
Paulette Halliday, Resident Scholar
