Plot Summary of Josephine and the Soldier
"Seventeen-year-old Josephine Best was raised in a free black family that operated a station on the underground railroad and held progressive views on a woman's place in the world. Josephine attended college and now works as a hairdresser and owns her own business. But at the same time, she worries about her father and brother, who are away fighting in the Civil War. When her brother's childhood friend Adam Morgan returns from the war with a leg injury, he is surprised to see how much little "Jojo" has grown up, and Josephine is surprised by her attraction to her childhood tormenter."
