| Plot Summary of Alva Myrdal - A Daughter's Memoir |
"Alva Reimer Myrdal, "born on a farm near the provincial Swedish town of Ekilstuna was a girl who ached to study and read and travel but found all avenues blocked", because of her sex. How she overcame this first barrier and obtained an education is only one of the many challenges described in this loving biography by her daughter Sissela, one of three children born to Alva and Gunnar Myrdal.
Alva's marriage to Gunnar at first was realization of a dream, as she became his literary helpmate and sounding board while he wrote the Nobel prize winning study,"An American Dilemma", published in NY in 1944. Alva soon moved on to publishing two books of her own,"Nation and Family, in 1941,and Womens' Two Roles, in 1956. But it was for "The Game of Disarmament", published in '1976, that Alva herself was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1982 at the age of eighty."
