"Victoria Huntington, who is quite the adventurer, is drawn into an association with Lucas Colebrook, the Earl of Stonevale. He promises to be her companion on midnight excursions that take them to the lowliest brothels. Victoria is troubled by nightmares about events in her past, and soon it seems like the person she feared has come back from the dead. Lucas undertakes the task of being her companion for one reason: her fortune. He is broke, a new holder of deteriorating lands, and needs a wife with funds to set them right again. He sets out to seduce her, marry her, and achieve her money; and he succeeds. Only after losing her trust does he see that she means more to him than money, and they slowly work their way back to each other while at the same time trying to ward off the danger that is threatening their lives."
