| Plot Summary of There's A Hair In My Dirt |
"Gary Larsen, the creator of the "Far Side" comic strip, has written and illustrated a hilarious satire on naïve and ignorant, but well-meaning, ecologists. “There's A Hair In My Dirt” resembles a children's picture book, but its acerbic wit is anything but childlike. When a young earthworm complains that there is a hair in his plate of dirt, his father tells him how it came to be there. A rather dull-witted, middle-age woman with good intentions used to take frequent hikes through the forest, always ready to lend what she thought was a helping hand to animals that seemed to be in danger. All that her assistance did was to create problems where none existed before or make bad situations worse. Ironically, one of her good deeds finally kills her, and it is a hair from her corpse that the young earthworm has found in his dirt. The book contains many visual jokes, both in the main illustrations and in smaller drawings that are hidden, so to speak, in the intricacies of the forest foliage and vegetation or that are tucked away in the pictures' backgrounds or in the pages' margins.
