| Plot Summary of Atonement |
"A young girl witnesses her cousin's rape and identifies the wrong character, Robbie Turner, instead of her brother's weekend guest,Paul Marshall.
Robbie, who just graduated from University and intended to go to medical school, is instead sentenced to jail. His term is commuted after three years by joining the British Army as a non-commissioned officer.
He is caught in France in the march to Dunkirk to be evacuated. Only his love for Cecilia, the young girl's sister, keeps him going.
In a series of flashbacks, the author portrays the young girl's coming of age and depicts the horror of the retreat of the British army while revealing the real culprit of the crime. "
