| Plot Summary of Han d'Islande |
"HAN D'ISLANDE is the first novel of Victor Hugo published in 1823.
Norway, 1699. Ordener Guldenlew, the son of one of the most important barons of the scandinavian Kingdom, is in love with Schumacker's daughter Ethel who knows him only by his first name. Schumacker was once the favorite minister of the King but was overthrown 20 years ago by Ordener's father. Schumacker and Ethel are from then on prisoners in the Munckholm island. In the meantime, the enemies of Schumacker want to definitively get rid of him and organize the uprising of the local miners who want to be freed of certain royal prerogatives. Those miners are asked to name Schumacker as the thinking leader of their movement if caught.
But all these well-thought plans will be changed when HAN, a bloody criminal, decides to avenge his son's death by killing every man who crosses his path.
A superb first novel in the Walter Scott manner.
