Plot Summary of 100 Years of Solitude
"Márquez, an author from Colombia, writes long, thorough, family allegorical epics, a la Tolstoy. He writes of surreal events and magical occurrence that take place in very small towns to very ordinary people. All his novels take place in the nineteenth century, though he is a twentieth century writer. 100 Years of Solitude is his best work, and is a chronicle of the Buendía family (whose names get repeated over and over again, so be prepared to get confused) which, for the 100 years of its existence, experiences nothing but grief, isolation and solitude."
David J. Peterson, Resident Scholar

"A family line is followed for one hundred years, with nearly every male having one of two names (Aureliano or Jose Arcadio). The family struggles in the mythical town of Macondo, where many strange events occur; war, forbidden love, death, etc."
Lindsey Hunter, Resident Scholar
