"Claire Roth, a successful New York psychotherapist, accepts a new client, Jody Goodman, a young filmmaker, for some sessions before Jody leaves for the West Coast and filmmaking school. Claire put a child up for adoption when she was much younger, and Jody is adopted, so when Claire begins to believe Jody may be her daughter, she starts to lose her objectivity and intrude too far into Jody's life, upsetting her own husband and their children. This novel predates Homes's later and darker _Music for Torching_ and _The End of Alice_, and is lighter if no less depressing -- with some of the same sardonic wit and unblinking look at adult motivations and sexuality."
