| Plot Summary of Fatal Remedies |
"For Vice Comissario Guido Brunetti, life isn't going so well. He is worried that his son might be interested in drugs, and, now, his wife Paola has been arrested
for smashing the window of a travel agency (a travel agency that she know specializes in arrange sex tours to third world countries!). For readers of this incredibly exciting series, Paola's actions come as no surprise--she is a woman of high principles and high moral fiber. However, this is a murder mystery and Paola's crime doesn't rate the same concern or urgency. And the murder arrives soon enough. The key witness to a Mafia holdup finds his wife murdered.
Brunetti, who has been suspended from the department pending his wife's investigation, is recalled and he sets out to solve this highly flamable, highly political, and very highly illegal crime. Author Donna Leon is at her best here, as she unabashably confronts a number of contemporary issues. Tainted pharmaceuticals in Third World countries weigh heavily in this mesmerizing plot, as well. And Leon doesn't hesitate to expose what she claims is the blatant
corruption by local politicians. Set in Venice, Italy, as are all her Brunetti novels, the author also makes the Pearl of the Adriatic a city that is at once electrifying and a must-visit. Brunetti rules again!

"There is trouble in the Brunetti household. Guido, a Commisario of Police in Venice is at extreme odds with his wife, Paola, over an act of vandalism she has chosen as her form of vigilantism. As they await the outcome of her crime, they are torn between their love for each other and their strong disagreement on her method of drawing attention to a painfully immoral business concern.
Then the owner of the business is found murdered. Guido begins his investigation by talking to the distraught wife of the victim. And it is she who, in the end, guides him to the murderer. But first Guido finds that there is more than one illegal or borderline legal business, set up to ravish people in the third world, which has to be uncovered.
