"10-year-old Trisana Chandler is a young mage living at Winding Circle Temple in Emelan. She is bound to a quartet of mages such as herself, whose powers are combined with hers. Tris is suprised when her own cousin visits the temple, a reminder of her family who abandoned her. After an earthquake the previous year, Winding Circle is open to pirate attack. The pirates must be getting information from inside the temple, but no one knows who is their spy. Could Tris's own cousin be planning to destroy the only home she's ever felt welcomed in?"

" Sandry, a girl of eleven is saved from a magically hidden room by a powerful mage who has sought her out, who goes by the name of Niko. But, he also seeks out 3 others. Briar, a young thief who was to be sentenced to labor or death; Daja, a young trader girl who Niko found after a mid-winter storm devoured her ship and relatives, and Tris, who has never been wanted and was taken from another temple where she was a nuisance.
They all have hidden magic that they don'y know about till Niko reveals it to them. Sandry, the gift of thread-work , Briar, who has a thing with earth, Daja, metal-work, and Tris, who is tied to the weather in a strange way.
But, a large earthquake that wasn't supposed to come is sent their way by a foolish mage who thought he could trap the workings of the most magical of all, Mother Earth. He is devoured by the magic, but in the crystals he tried to trap the quake in, the quake gathered enough strength to rock the coast for miles. In its wake, it traps the children in a cave. Will their magic be enought to keep them breathing?"

"Tris's cousin comes to visit, which is a great reminder of a family who had abandoned her. After the earthquake the year before, Winding Circle is left with hardly any defenses and is in an very vulnerable position. Daja is left to help her teacher repair the damaged defenses, Sandry is left with her teacher to help the surrounding area with clothing, Briar is left with his teacher to help with those injured, and Tris is left with no one to talk to, nothing important to do, the only thing she can do is go onto the wall of Winding Circle and look out at the sea. But when doing this she thinks she sees hints of magic in the harbor and is left with trying to find out what was going on out there. Then one night a small band of pirates infiltrates Winding Circles wall. But left with what Tris had seen they were ready and all were captured including Tris's own cousin. The next morning there was a full-scale assault on the harbor by the pirates in the harbor. They soon took the harbor and then moved their eyes onto Winding Circle. All Four of the mages had to use their magic ability to help stop/slow the attacking pirates, weather it was blowing their own canon balls back at them, helping build last minute weapons, growing plants to stop their pursuit or protecting each other with magic each mage did his/her job to stop the attacking pirates."
