Plot Summary of All Possible Avenues
"A naive youth finds his first job as a clerk in the Internal Revenue Service. He finds it difficult to adjust to the jostling workplace where few of his fellow employees take their jobs very seriously. To the youth, the city offers wondrous possibilites, but he feels alienated by the lack of sympathy his fellow clerks show in his ambitions. They are mostly concerned with petty quarrels amd jealousies and all sorts of nit-picking about chairs, clocks, rules, lunchbreaks, tea-times, bundies and other minor office impedimenta. Many of the superior officers could only be classed as eccentric idiots. All this is told in a humorously, satiric fashion. A minor sub-plot concerns the mysterious death of the previous personnel manager. This plot does gather pace towards the climax, tying in with and tying up a few other odd happenings. But despite the fiery climax, the mystery element is but a minor peg in what is basically a comic account of the lack of training and job satisfaction in the business of tax collecting.
